Andy obtained his PhD degree from the State University of Gent, Belgium at the Faculty of Veterinary science, Animal Genetics.
He joined the Virology Department of Sciensano in 2003. His main activities are in the field of vaccine control and the development and validation of diagnostics for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), bluetongue (BTV), lumpy skin disease and sheep and goat pox.
At Sciensano he is a senior scientist with involvement in Diagnostics and R&D for FMD, BTV, Capripox, parapox and Rift valley fever and is actively involved in the EU Reference Laboratory for diseases caused by capripox viruses.
He is member of the expert group on ‘Recombinant viral vectors, virosomes, vaccines, gene therapy’ of the national “Biosafety Advisory Council” and is (or has been) involved in several national and international research projects (such as RP-POX, LSDV_FAO, Bill & Melinda Gates, RCO, OrbiVac, Arbo-Zoonet GalvMed).
